NCP applies for registration, seeks ‍‍`Shapla‍‍` as electoral symbol

The National Citizens Party (NCP) has submitted its application to the Election Commission (EC) seeking official registration as a political party.

Following the submission, the party’s Member Secretary Akhtar Hossain stated that the NCP has fulfilled all the necessary requirements under the Representation of the People Order (RPO) to qualify for registration. "The Election Commission has accepted our application," he said.

NCP‍‍`s Chief Organizer Nasir Uddin Patwari confirmed that the party has requested the ‍‍`Shapla‍‍` (water lily), the national flower, as their preferred electoral symbol. The party has also proposed ‍‍`Pen‍‍` and ‍‍`Mobile Phone‍‍` as alternative symbols.

According to party sources, the NCP has so far formed committees in approximately 130 upazilas and around 30 districts across the country.

The Election Commission earlier launched the new party registration process on March 10. After 46 parties applied for an extension, the EC extended the registration deadline by two months on April 20.

Since the introduction of the party registration system in 2008, there are currently 50 registered political parties in the country.

The NCP delegation to the EC also included Senior Joint Convener Samantha Sharmin and Chief Organizer (North) Sarjis Alam.
